How to use drain rods

Drain Rods can be bought at most DIY shops are a great way for you to tackle your own drain problems. The price ranges from £30 all the way up to £60. They will come with different attachments these are a disc and a claw. The disc screws on to the end of the rod and this will allow you to plunge you toilet pan or main drain.

The purpose of the disc is to create a hydraulic motion in the pipe work. As you move the rod backwards and forwards the disc will force the water to move in the pipe work. You move the rod back and forth the pull the rod out and the blockage will hopefully clear.

The claw attachment is used for digging into hard blockages. You can work away with this tool to breakdown the blockage, The claw can also be used for removing some root ingress.

If you need to make the rods longer they screw together to give you more length always turn the rods in a clock wise direction. If the rods are turned anti-clock wise the will come undone in the drain pipe, Then you will need to call a professional drain clearance company to come and retrieve them.
